Where are you located?
Our lab is located in the Biodiversity Research Centre, which is connected to the Beaty Biodiversity Museum, at the University of British Columbia Vancouver campus. If you are interested in joining the lab, please contact me in August of the previous year. Usually by January of the year of entry I have reached the maximum number of students I can consider for the fall entry. I do not accept students for January or May start dates.
*NEW: I am most likely not accepting any new MSc students for fall 2024.
What topics does your lab specialize in? See all the topics listed on the home page. IMPORTANT: I receive a lot of requests from students interested in working exclusively on pollinators. Please reach out to other UBC labs (e.g. Sargent, Carrillo, Kremen) if you would like to specialize on pollinators.
How much will I be paid? The minimum stipend in Botany or Zoology is ~$30,000. This funding comes from Teaching Assistant positions (~13,000 for Sept-April position), from fellowship/scholarship support, and from my research grants. In any given year I can usually take ONE student who does not have external funding/fellowships. Unfortunately I have to turn down many excellent potential graduate students per year.
What's it like at UBC & Vancouver? Vancouver & UBC are beautiful, inclusive, diverse, and one of the best places to study ecology/evolution/biodiversity in North America. BUT! Vancouver is extremely expensive. It can be difficult to live off the minimum stipend. Please consider your finances carefully before applying to UBC.
