Are you taking new students for fall 2026? Maybe. I hope to be on sabbatical leave during the 2026-2027 academic year but that is not finalized.
Where are you located? Our lab is located in the Biodiversity Research Centre, which is connected to the Beaty Biodiversity Museum, at the University of British Columbia Vancouver campus. If you are interested in joining the lab, please contact me in August of the previous year.
What topics does your lab specialize in? See all the topics listed on the home page. IMPORTANT: Please reach out to other UBC labs (e.g. Sargent, Carrillo, Kremen) if you would like to study bees.
How much will I be paid? Graduate student stipends range from $32-$47,000 CAN. The actual amount depends on where your funding comes from. The stipend usually comes from a combination of teaching assistantships, scholarships and fellowships, and my grants.
What's it like at UBC & Vancouver? Vancouver & UBC are beautiful, inclusive, diverse, and one of the best places to study ecology and evolution in North America. However, Vancouver is extremely expensive. You may be happier with a real job rather than going to graduate school. Grad school has many advantages but it's not for everyone.
